Axel Stahmer was awarded a doctoral degree from ESMT in May 2018.
Axel was a member of the Berlin Doctoral Program in Economics & Management Science (BDPEMS). In 2017 he was granted a research fellowship at Harvard University, Cambridge. He was awarded an ESMT PhD Fellowship in 2017 and was an Einstein Foundation Scholar from 2011 to 2014.

Previously, Axel studied Business Administration with a major in Capital Markets and Finance in Munich (LMU) and Paris (ESSEC), where he was rewarded with the Dean's List fellowship. After receiving his degree in 2006, Axel went to work for JP Morgan's investment banking division in London and started pursuing his PhD end of 2011 within the Berlin BDPEMS program.

Axel research interests lie in the field of financial markets, investor behavior and corporate finance. He researches the effects of delegated asset management on market prices and risk taking. Moreover he is interested in investment based approaches to capital structure.

In 2015 he published the article “Where did the Greek bailout money go?” with Jörg Rocholl, which was cited in the national and international press. Axel acted as reviewer for the international finance journals including the Journal of Banking and Finance and presented his work at the Paris Financial Management Conference and at the Boston University.
